Posted June 8th, 2017    2015   0

Hi
I do new that my internett speed could drop when using the vpn service. But I thought I would give it a go and see how it was. I was really supriced when I downloaded the vpn "app" and decided to test my internett speed. It dropped from 80mb/s to 2/mb/s. I desided to download the 1000mb test file that I found on the support site, and sure it actaly downloaded with 104kb/s with the "app" turned on and at 9,8MB/s with it turned of.... I am a really nuby to this things so I thought I ask if I did anything wrong or is suppose to drop that much?

What I did was download and install the vpn "app" for windows and chosed contry and "auto server". Tried allsow to connect to a spesific server but the same result.

First of all, let me start by saying that by using any VPN solution, the speed will not be the same as without the VPN. You will see a big speed penalty, mostly due to the encryption involved and the extra roundtrip that your data has to do, through the VPN server and back.

That said, as bigger as this roundtrip is, the bigger the latency, the bigger the speed drop. It also depends on the peering between the VPN server and your ISP and the peering between the VPN server and the site you want to access. So a VPN server, being a "middleman" adds a network level of compexity with many variables to consider.

This is why our VPN service is mostly optimized for anonymizing browsing. It should not be used for downloading. If you want to download files through your seedbox, then just use encrypted FTP. Your seedbox provides you already with the necessary level o anonymity, there is no need to use a VPN on top of that

Now, what you can try, is to change the location of the VPN server to connect. The application will choose automatically the closest server to you, however, this might not be the best option all the time. For instance, if you live in the US, you can try to use the Netherlands VPN servers. Might be little bit more far away, but since you were trying to download a file from our Netherlands servers, and we do have quite good peering with the US, they will probably work much better for you than the US VPN server. Give it a try
